Oklahoma Pilot Car Requirements
When does an oversize or overweight load need a pilot car or escort in Oklahoma? Here are the width, height, length and weight thresholds that trigger an escort, a height pole, or a police escort.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol escort required for widths exceeding 23'. Between 20'–23', OHP escort discretionary. Turnpike max without escort is 12'; over 13'6" not permitted on turnpikes (47 O.S. §14-116).

Oklahoma Highway Patrol escort required for overall lengths exceeding 200'. OHP escort discretionary for 150'–200' (47 O.S. §14-116).
- Lead (front) pilot carover 15'9" height
Front+rear pilots plus height-clearance pole required for heights over 15'9". Utility contacts required before movement. No night movement over 15'9" (OAC 595:30-5-15).
- Chase (rear) pilot carover 15'9" height
Rear pilot required in addition to front escort for heights over 15'9". Height pole and utility contacts also required (OAC 595:30-5-15).
- Height-pole escortover 15'9" height
Height-clearance pole mandatory on lead pilot car for loads exceeding 15'9" tall. Utility notification and coordination required (OAC 595:30-5-15).
- Lead (front) pilot carover 14'0" width
Front pilot required on 2-lane/super 2-lane roads for widths over 14'. On multi-lane, lead not required until width exceeds 16' (OAC 595:30-5-15).
- Chase (rear) pilot carover 100'0" length
Rear pilot added for combos over 100' on 2-lane/super 2-lane roads. Lead+chase both required. OHP escort discretionary at 150'–200'; required over 200' (OAC 595:30-5-15).
- Lead (front) pilot carover 80'0" length
Front pilot required on 2-lane roads for truck-tractor/semitrailer combos over 80'. For other combos, pilot required over 100' on 2-lane (OAC 595:30-5-15).
- Chase (rear) pilot carover 12'0" width
Rear pilot required on multi-lane highways for widths 12'1"–16'. On 2-lane roads, chase added at over 14'. Lead+chase required over 16' on all roads (OAC 595:30-5-15).
Travel restrictions
- Daylight-only travelover 12'0" width
Movement permitted only 1/2 hr before sunrise to 1/2 hr after sunset, 7 days/week. No night oversize travel without special written ODOT authorization (OAC 595:30-3-1).
- Weekend / holiday restrictionover 12'0" width
No oversize movement on New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day (47 O.S. §14-101). Holiday window begins noon of preceding day.
Driver & inspection requirements
- Certified escort driver requiredover 12'0" width
ODOT certification required for all escort drivers. OSU Tech-administered course; 5-year renewal term. Reciprocal with AZ, CO, FL, MN, NC, UT, VA, WA, GA (OAC 595:30-5-15).
